Our story
From the Government Chemist to a global standards leader
LGC began in 1842 as the Laboratory of the Government Chemist, established to protect public revenue and public health by verifying what was actually in tobacco and, before long, in food, water and medicines. Nearly two centuries later the purpose has not changed: give people measurements they can act on. Today LGC Standards produces and supplies more than 110,000 certified reference materials and analytical standards under the Mikromol, Dr. Ehrenstorfer, TRC, LGC Industrial and LGC AXIO brands. The wider group hosts the UK National Measurement Laboratory and the office of the Government Chemist, which means the traceability chain behind your calibration curve runs back to national and international measurement infrastructure rather than to a supplier assertion.
Every certified value is produced under an accredited quality system
Accreditation is the product, not the paperwork
An accreditation certificate on a wall is easy. Producing a value that an assessor can interrogate line by line is not. Every LGC certified reference material is planned against a documented characterisation strategy, tested for homogeneity and stability, assigned a value with a fully propagated uncertainty budget, and released only once the traceability chain is complete. The Certificate of Analysis states the certified value, the expanded uncertainty and coverage factor, the reference method, storage conditions and expiry date. That is exactly what your auditor is looking for, and it removes an entire category of risk from your laboratory.
